More Than 30,000 Wild Horses in BLM Holding Areas May Be Saved by Madeleine Pickens

Madeleine Pickens, uber-wealthy Texan and friend of wild horses, has proposed adopting all of the more than 30,000 horses that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is holding in pens and pasture, according to an Associated Press report today in the New York Times.

Pickens plans to create a foundation and buy 1 million acres of land in northern Nevada to serve as a refuge for the horses.  The BLM would give her the horses after she buys the land and the horses would be moved to the refuge after they are sterilized.  Pickens said

“We will never turn an animal down.”

“This is our national heritage, and it needs to be preserved.”

I think I just heard a million horses exhale.
